Maaya K-Moots was born as a personal project of Prof. Víctor Kú Caamal and its main objective is to teach the Yucatecan Mayan language through social networks, e.g. WhatsApp, Facebook, YouTube, etc. The project has passed through many stages and the road has not been easy. Fortunately, the language and the Mayan culture always find a way to move forward. The project has been steady gaining momentum and today it is consolidated into a cooperative with 19 language teachers and about 100 students. In addition to that, we have started a discussion project based on talks and debates called " Ko'oten Tsikbal ". There, we talked about various related issues on language, culture, traditions, of the Mayan peoples of Mesoamerica. In addition, we have opened the space to people from other areas of the world and with other stories; we have had guests from the Basque Country, Spain and Guatemala. Our talks spaces are open to both language teachers and students.

Another of our projects is -podcasts- and it is led by the Prof. José Nemesio Ail Baeza. Through these podcasts, we have been able to summarise some of the activities carried out during the year.

Finally, Maaya K-Moots have taken seriously a project of our own to which we are very committed:

  • The search for neologisms for modern scientific and technological concepts.

To develop this project, we have collaborated with young engineering students from Yucatan universities. These collaborations have allowed us to know the modern scientific vocabulary, fully understand its meaning and to find correct ways to express those ideas in our Yucatan language.

There are many ways to defend the Mayan language and culture. Let's all join forces and work with our well-intentioned hearts. The sum of our efforts will lead us to make our language alive, a modern and vibrant language.
